Shanghai Cooperation Organization and Iran’s interests

Tehran, IRNA – The administration of President Ebrahim Raisi has been pursuing official membership of Iran in one of the most important economic-oriented and security-creating entities of the world (the Shanghai Cooperation Organization), which can guarantee the Islamic Republic’s interests.

The Raisi administration’s neighboring policy has been welcomed by regional and Asian states, which paved the way for Iran’s acceptance in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

The SCO includes China, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, India, Pakistan and Iran. Three states of Afghanistan, Belarus and Mongolia are observers of the organization, and the dialogue partners of the SCO are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Turkiye.

Western countries are not members of the SCO and the unilateral policies of the United States do not affect the entity’s decisions. Some 25 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) of the world nations belong to the economic entity, standing at 20 trillion dollars, which shows 13 times growth over 20 years.

Iran kicked off the procedure of being a member of the SCO in 2015, but the process was finalized in the Raisi administration.

Given the fact that joining a group of powerful states can help a country to improve its status, Iran tries to stand with China and Russia in order to stand against the Western hegemony.

China wants to implement its One Belt One Road initiative and Russia is tired of the West’s interventions. Tehran, Beijing and Moscow seek to control organized terrorism in the West Asia region, which is aided and abetted by certain ultra-regional states.

The Iranians also want to defeat the West’s Iranophobic project via joining the regional alliances such as the SCO.

Although, the membership of Iran in the SCO will not be a magic force for Iranian economy, but the Raisi administration pursues the path to follow up Iran’s national interests.
